Technical Editor – Corporate Marketing
Remote | Full-Time | 37.5 Hours/Week | 6-Month Contract
$25-35/hr

Sapphire Recruitment is seeking an experienced Technical Editor to support a Corporate Marketing team within a large public-sector organization focused on energy and sustainability initiatives across New York State. This role will focus on entering a large number of technical reports while ensuring a high standard of quality, consistency, clarity, and accessibility.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented editor with strong technical editing experience, advanced document formatting skills, and the ability to work across complex subject matter with accuracy and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread technical reports ranging from 75 to 400 pages in Microsoft Word
  • Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, and consistency issues using established style guides
  • Improve readability and ensure content is clear, compelling, and appropriate for the intended audience
  • Review content for potential liability concerns or language that could create a negative impression
  • Format tables, graphics, captions, references, appendices, footnotes, and endnotes for consistency
  • Complete sample edits before beginning full-document edits
  • Collaborate with technical team members on significant content, style, or organizational changes
  • Create and maintain project-specific style sheets
  • Apply document accessibility standards throughout the editing process
  • Perform final quality checks on PDF documents before publication
  • Follow established editorial processes and support additional responsibilities as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, technical writing, communications, or a related field with at least 3 years of business experience, or an unrelated Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of direct technical editing experience
  • Strong technical editing skills and exceptional command of written English
  • Working knowledge of AP Style and Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to interpret technical material and present it clearly for different audiences
  • Experience creating and using style sheets
  • Advanced editing and formatting skills in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
  • Working knowledge of document accessibility standards
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Ability to shift across topics while maintaining consistent editing standards
  • Strong analytical, organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple editing projects and deadlines with speed, accuracy, and sound judgment

Preferred Experience

  • Editing for multiple audiences, including consumer, business, academic, and government readers
  • Experience with technical, creative, and marketing content
  • Background in energy, environmental science, engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with publication workflows and pre-publication quality assurance
  • Flexibility to adjust weekly availability based on workload demands

Technical Skills

  • Microsoft Office, especially advanced Word editing and formatting
  • Adobe Acrobat for PDF review, accessibility, and final quality checks
  • AP Style and Chicago Manual of Style
  • Exposure to remote access and content management tools is helpful
